The bay tree, sometimes known as the sweet bay, botanical name of Laurus nobilis, is a very popular species grown as topiary specimens. Native to the Mediterranean region, it is not quite as hardy as you would expect although it is perfectly fine being grown outside in the milder regions of the UK.
