Ernest 'Chinese' Wilsons search for the Regal Lily - Lilium regale


Ernest "Chinese" Wilson is renowned for introducing the Lilium regale, or regal lily, to the Western world. He first collected it in 1903 and then again in 1910-1911, when he faced a near-death experience during a landslide while collecting the bulbs. Ok, you know we can't help ourselves. Its a new season and we have been buying new plants like they are going out in fashion. There is one issue though, and that is since we made this video there has been a tsunami of new plants that have arrives at the door such as tropical bulbs, fancy canna cultivars, pineapple lilies and the list doesn't stop there. Correct! Slugs are no longer considered garden pests!


So it's good news! The Royal Horticultural Society has decided on behalf of the rest of us that slugs are no longer be classified as a pest due to the excellent environmental benefits they provide including the efficient and large scale recycling of plant material. Unfortunately the RHS hasn't had the forethought to tell the slugs this so, at least for now, they will continue to eat all of your most expensive and best-loved plants. Well done to the RHS!

Monty Don's Full List of Seeds to be Sown in February


This is Monty Dons full list of vegetable seeds to be planted in February. The list is broken down into the following groups:

Heated propagators for Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and aubergines at approximately 20 Celsius 
Peas in root trainers, deep modular tray or toilet rolls   

Chit potatoes – first and second earlies to get the sprouting earlier. This will give you an earlier crop compared to not chitting 

Onions, spring onions, leeks, lettuce, asparagus, artichokes, beetroot, cabbage and cauliflower on a warm windowsill  

Under a cloche or a polytunnel - Carrots,  

Outside if the soil is workable - Broad beans, Garlic bulbs and Onion sets
