How to grow Spiraea x arguta 'Bridal Wreath'


Commonly known as the 'Foam of May' or just simply 'Bridal Wreath', Spiraea x arguta 'Bridal Wreath' is gorgeous ornamental deciduous plant noted for its outstanding plumes of white flowers. It is in fact a hybrid between two further hybrids (Spiraea x multiflora and Spiraea x thunbergii), and although there is little information regarding its selection it is believed to have entered general cultivation sometime before 1884.

How to grow Spiraea x arguta 'Bridal Wreath'
It is a dense growing, medium sized shrub which under favourable conditions can be expected to grow to a height and spread of approximately 1.5-2.5 metres. It has narrow oblong-lanceolate, mid-green leaves, and a profusion of white blooms with appear in late April until May on the slender, arching stems. Each flower is approximately 5 cm across.

The best time to plant Spiraea x arguta 'Bridal Wreath' is between October and March so to give it a chance to establish its roots system before the new growing season commences. It will perform best in an sunny, open position, in a deep, fertile soil.

Pruning isn't really necessary, however overgrown specimens can be renovated by cutting back hard immediately after flowering.
