The Canary Island Date palm - Phoenix canariensis, is a stunning exotic tree from the Canary Islands and widely planted in the south coast of England. Yet despite reports of it being surprisingly cold winter hardy, many of the young plants purchased fail to survive their first winter. So what is going on? Is it hardy or is it not hardy?
