HOW TO GROW MONKEY FACE ORCHIDS FROM SEED - A WARNING!

How to grow Monkey Face Orchids from seed

Monkey faced orchids are some of the most intriguing and captivating ornamental flowering plants that money can buy. And why wouldn't they be when they are one of the few plant genera than can look back at you when you look at it!

Monkey orchid
Of course the opportunities to purchase such as coveted specimen are few and far between and therefore many would-be collectors turn to the web to purchase monkey face orchid seed.

Unfortunately there are a number or unscrupulous traders who are advertising monkey face orchid seed for sale, and sadly what they dispatch is not. This is a blatant scam.

Furthermore orchid seeds are extremely small, ranging in size from nearly invisible dust-like particles and up to the size of pin pricks. Anything larger and they are not orchid seed. To clarify, orchid seeds are usually purchased as seed pods or by weight so anyone claiming to sell 5 or even 50 orchid seeds is probably lying. The seeds of most orchid species are far too small to count out in this manner.

There is a bigger problem as you cannot simply pot on and grow orchid seeds like you would with other typical houseplants. Many orchids rely on complex relationships with their parent plants including symbiotic relationships with mycorrhizal fungal species in order for the seed to germinate.

In the unlikely event that you do manage to purchase some genuine seed and wish to grow them yourself, there is another stumbling block. You will need access to laboratory equipment such as an autoclave and laminar flow hood, as well as good practical knowledge of aseptic (sterile) propagation technique. Orchid seeds are currently grown in flasks on an agar based medium.

If you still want to get hold of a monkey face orchid then your best course of action is to contact your local orchid society.

Bought some from EBay too.. I feel that something should have been stated in the description of the seeds, that some serious orchid growing equipment and experience would be necessary to cultivate. Maybe I am just dumb for not knowing that already...

This is upsetting! Has anyone notified eBay that these Monkey Faced Orchid seeds they are selling are fakes?
Anyone know what actually grows from the seeds they send?
Yes, I too fell for the scam and bought the Monkey Faced Orchid seeds from eBay.

Cindy. I just bought some from tophatter.Com . I will also try and plant them.If I do not get a monkey plant I will complain . They will stop them from selling on their sight.

If you check out the other seeds these site are selling you will most likely
See that they are also selling seeds for things like Rare Rainbow Roses which do not grow from seeds
they are stem dyed and can only be bought as cut flowers. Also if you look at the reviews on Amazon and EBay you will find people complaining about being ripped off.

I finally planted my alleged "Baby Faced" and "Monkey Faced" Orchid seeds I purchased from two different ebay sellers. I am going to try to include a link to pictures I posted on Facebook. The "Baby Faced" have sprouted nicely but only on "Monkey Faced" sprouted and I am not so sure it isn't a weed. If this post works I will try to keep sharing as these mystery seeds continue to grow!

it wouldn't let me embed the pictures. Pooh!

Ha, we're all such goobers, I just purchased mine from china. 100 for $.40 so I don't feel too bad. I have access to an autoclave, so can you help me on what to do, just run them through a cycle? thanks in advance for the help!

Utopialive87 sold me my fake Monkey Face Orchid seeds that did NOT germinate at all, along with several over seeds. Their Japanese Maple seeds also did NOT germinate. I haven't planted any of the others yet but I am not hopeful!

cherry-blossom2015 sold me the "Baby Face Orchid" seeds, they did germinate. Still waiting to see what they actually grow into!

Why does eBay not shut down these fake seed sellers? They should at least allow you to block sellers, like they allow you to block buyers!
