If you are looking to buy giant allium seeds - Allium giganteum, then the 'Seeds of Eaden' seed shop has them for sale as part of their standard range. Native to central and southwestern Asia, Allium giganteum is one of the tallest of all the available large allium cultivars, however being a true species rather than a selected cultivar means that it will grow true from seed (unlike the selected hybrids which do not).

Growing to approximately 1.5 metres tall, Allium giganteum produces small globes of intense purple umbels in early to midsummer. These are followed by attractive and significantly larger deep-violet fruiting umbels which are approximately 15–20 cm in diametre.

The Allium giganteum hybrids 'Gladiator' and 'Globemaster' were granted the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 1995.

Despite their exotic looks and origins, Allium giganteum seeds are easy germinate and the resulting plants are surprisingly hardy in even the cool, temperate regions of southern England.

Allium giganteum seeds can be sown indoors or under protection in a modular seed tray from January to mid-March on the surface of a good quality seed compost such as John Innes 'Seed and Cutting'. Maintain a temperature of approximately 15-20 degrees Celsius and place inside either a propagator or clear polythene bag to help keep the compost moist. Germination will usually take three months.
