WHERE DO CHEETAHS LIVE?




Cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) historically lived throughout Africa, the Middle East, and Southern Asia, but sadly this is no longer the case. Their natural habitat is now severely reduced, and their populations have been decimated through centuries of removal from the wild for use as domestic pets.

However, most of the remaining wild cheetah populations are located in sub-Saharan Africa (south of the Saharan Desert) with some smaller populations in Northern Africa. In fact there is one isolated population still living in Iran  - estimated at 50, as well as some unconfirmed reports to indicate that there may be some cheetahs left in India.

The largest remaining African Cheetah population is located in the region of Namibia and Botswana (Southern Africa), while the second largest population survives in Kenya and Tanzania (East Africa).

Unfortunately, with the way the world is progressing, the answer to 'Where do Cheetahs live?' in the future may soley be on wildlife reserves and zoos.

Habitat

Cheetahs love to live in semi-desert environments where there is thick brush and lots of open, flat land. However, cheetahs can live in a variety of different habitats. Cheetahs in Namibia live in grasslands, savannas and on mountains.

Habits

Surprisingly,  male and female cheetahs have completely different lifestyles. The female can spend up to 20 months looking after each litter of cubs, but she will mainly lead an otherwise solitary lifestyle. She is not aggressive to other cheetahs, preferring to retreat rather than attack. Neither is she territorial although her range may overlap with other females.

By contrast, males are rarely solitary, living and hunting in an all male group of four or five animals. This group will often comprise of brothers from the same litter, which will generally stay together for life.

Fiercely territorial, each male group scent marks its boundary with urine. Should other males encroach on the territory of an established group, fierce fights will occur, sometimes resulting in the death of an intruder.

Scent is used by females to tell a male when she is receptive, although once the male has picked up her scent the pair will communicate using a series of calls.
